BIOGRAPHY
Afua Richardson (also credited as Lakota Sioux ) is an artist, best known for her work on Top Cow’s 2008 Pilot Season winner, ‘ Genius ‘.
Richardson is a self-taught comic book illustrator and writer ( Born April 25th 1980) . She was originally published under the alias Lakota Sioux, in honor of her Native American heritage. Her client list includes Marvel, DC and Image Comics, as well as Humit, Pulse Music, Disney/American Idol. Her work on “Genius” was nominated for the 2009 Glyph Awards, for Best Story, Best Artist, Best Female Character, Best Cover, and Fan Favorite Award. Afua is also the recipient the 2011 Nina Simone award for Artistic achievement .
Afua is also a classically trained musician, and professional singer/ songwriter. Not to mention a graphic artist and a budding voice actor. One would say, such a polymath is nothing short of a modern day Renaissance woman.
ART HISTORY
Afua was born to an oil painter/ physicist and and old fashioned cut and paste graphic designer. She’d often spend her early days sketching unknowing passengers on the New York City subway, while commuting to school where she majored in instrumental music.
Later, Richardson spent lunch breaks at her various dead end office jobs , fiddling with with Adobe Photoshop and illustrator ( since buying water colors was getting costly on her modest budget) browsing tutorials and posting on forum for critique & advice on perfecting her craft. For Several years Afua pursued a career in music, and touring part-time as a back ground singer and doing voice overs for commercials and jingles. She was in the opening act for such artist as Alicia Keys, Parliament funkadelic, and Sheila E . In 2008, Afua was cast as 5 different characters in a 3 man Broadway Play, ‘ B’rer Soul’ starring award winning playwright and director ,Sir Melvin Van Peebles.
It was a difficult time treading water in the concrete jungle of the big apple. But in 2007, was granted the opportunity to work on her first full length comic book series with Top Cow Productions for their annual Pilot season contest. The series “Genius” By Marc Bernardin & Adam Freeman won reader’s choice, and went on to be nominated for 6 Glyph awards including best Cover, best new Character and Fan award.
Afua Is currently working on Genius and other short stories and books. Occasionally brandishing the name “Dr Foo” , she has migrated south for the winter. Richardson is currently hibernating in Tuscaloosa Alabama.
